In 1960 Lena Spencer founded the coffeehouse that bears her name. It is, in the worlds of Arlo Guthrie, a national treasure. Guthrie is among the many folk music legends who have been regulars at Caffe Lena. The list includes Bob Dylan, Jerry Jeff Walker, Tom Paxton, Spalding Gray, Kate & Anna McGarrigle, and many, many others. This 1990 film which marked Lena’s death in 1989 is narrated by Kate McGarrigle, and contains reminiscences and performances by acoustic music greats including Arlo Guthrie, Kate & Anna McGarrigle, David Bromberg, Rosalie Sorrels, Utah Phillips, Dave van Ronk, Rory Block, David Amram, and special guest Spalding Gray. Lena was on her way to see Gray at The Egg in Albany when she fell down the stairs of Caffe Lena and died. The film is directed by Stephen Trombley and produced by David Meyer and Helena Solberg.
